PERSONALITY TRAITS

Kaiyo is always optimistic, always smiling unless she is really uncomfortable, scared or sad. It is rare to find her sad but she gets scared quite easily until she becomes more comfortable with it, and nigh impossible to deter her from trying to cheer someone up if she has made that her task. She catches on to much more then she lets show, but still seems very childish and naive because of her inexperience with modern society, magic and technology. Kaiyo has a good heart, she tries her best not to offend anyone or hurt them in any way, and her care extends to all living beings even the ones that terrify her.
There are times when she will overwork herself to the point where she falls ill, however she always bounces back to normal relatively quickly with no lasting effects. She generally doesn't realize that she has overworked herself either.

Kaiyo was born the second youngest daughter of the Hatako family, not destined for much but optimistic about the future and her fate anyways. That was before her mother died. Kaiyo was very attached to her mother so her loss hit the girl very hard. She was devastated unlike her brother Daisuke. She relied on him and her other siblings a lot for emotional support, never smiling no matter how hard others tried to cheer her up. This phase lasted for a number of years, she barely registered the fact that her father had remarried until her eldest brother Snowe left, leaving Daisuke to become the next head of family. Her father would never tell her where Snowe went no matter how often she asked.
She gradually grew out of her depression, she began to smile agian while she played with Daisuke and the others. It wasn't too long before another person was struck off the family tree by death. Kaiyo was close enough to Rima when she fell into the water that she saw everything, even if she couldn't hear for a few moments after Rima's screams. This time though, Kaiyo forced herself to smile. Everyone else had been there for her when she needed them, so it was her turn to be strong. Daisuke was stronger though.
She helped out her step-mother with everything from cleaning to patching torn clothes, although she was most fond of helping in the kitchen. She was never able to go near the river where Rima died agian, or any body of water deeper then a bathtub for that matter. She was scared of thunder, the teapot's whistle, anything overly loud or high-pitched.
Kaiyo did what she could to be useful, to exceed expectations, to be as smart and as strong as her older brother, while still maintaining a smile and having fun the entire time. She wasn't sure how to react when he enlisted her at the academy, but she took it as a good opportunity to explore the world she had basically ignored for her entire life.
