He likes to sleep in on sunny Saturdays and enjoys having a piece of candy in his mouth whenever he's awake. He generally tries to have a cheerful disposition if not slightly wary about meeting new people or going new places. He finds everything in the world outside of his families narrow views to be absolutely amazing even if its the simplest thing and enjoys learning about new things. Though he's a big guy he has a soft spot of animals of all sorts, whether its a toad or even a dragon its all the same to him. There's a trick to dealing with every creature and he's bound and determined to find it. He's taken his reputation as a so called "ladies man" with a grain of salt. On one hand it keeps his cover and on the other it makes him look like he's some sort of disgusting womanizer when really he just doesn't want to admit that there are two things abnormal about him. He tries hard at his coursework but more often than not finds himself slightly overwhelmed since he dislikes asking people for help. More often than not he has more than one late night struggling to finish an essay that he should have been working on a week ago. GENERAL INFORMATION LIKES: • sugar • his cat • the ocean • DISLIKES: • his father • pressure • large numbers HABITS: • chewing on his nails and pen caps INTERESTING TRAITS: • Has telekinetic abilities which consist of him being able to move objects across rooms. Most of the time small objects but if he concentrates enough then larger ones. HISTORY Leland was born to an extremely catholic family where his father was the boss and that was the end of it. Both Leland and his sister were raised to keep their heads down and their nose in the bible so that one day they could be rewarded for all of their hard work and worship by getting into heaven. Not knowing any better he spent his life accepting that he would need to do follow what his father said in order to achieve happiness. Even at a young age though he wasn't happy. It hurt his heart and his head whenever his father would ramble about the 'damn homosexuals and sinners' that came through town on occasion. He soon grew up to realize that he wasn't exactly like the other kids and in more ways than one. At age eleven he realized that he was different from other people, that he could make things happen even when they weren't supposed to. Leland was terrified. Everything his parents had taught him had told him that this was the devil's work and that if he went down this path he'd go to hell. Then again if he was already infected with this so called magic then there was nothing that could be done anyways. What he did know was that he couldn't tell his parents. He contacted others though, trying to reach out and luckily he found a few others like him. He kept the letters tucked underneath his pillow in a place that his father normally wouldn't look and planned to travel to the next city over and catch a bus to the train station. He gathered up his small allowance and packed up the few things he had. A few weeks before the time for him to leave his mother was picking up his room, a chore that usually he took care of himself but on this day he was busy helping his father mend a fence outside. In a panic she called for her husband and showed him the letters that their son had been receiving. The beating he got was nothing compared to the disappointment he felt whenever he was told that he would never ever be allowed to go to a school that encouraged witchcraft. He was locked in his room and brought out only when it was time for church. His mother sat outside his bedroom door reading bible verses while he tried to devise a plan on how to get out. Late one night he waited for his family to fall asleep, his father being the last to go well after midnight. Once more he gathered his things and the little bit of money that he had saved and quietly left the house. It was a long journey, especially for an eleven year old but he was determined to see it through. He knew that if he headed home now or got caught it would be the end of everything for him. It took awhile but between his walking and hitching a ride where he could he made his way to the station relatively unharmed. Nothing but a few cuts and bruises that he soon found adult wizards were able to take care of. He explained the situation and while it wasn't unheard of for kids to run away from home to get to the save haven it wasn't exactly encouraged. Still, seeing the still healing bruises left by his fathers hand he was temporarily taken in by a family. They sponsored him, paying for the basic things he needed to go to school and he couldn't thank them enough. He promised to pay them back as soon as he could. The greatest moment was when he held his wand for the first time. They had gone through box after box and none of them had seemed right. But when he finally did find the right one he knew. Once it was in his hand he felt like everything was going to be okay, at least for now. Finally when he was with others like him after all of that time he could feel his nerves growing even more. The people that took him in temporarily tried to teach him what they could about the school and about his world but time was short and there had been many things for them to do. There were so many kids that already knew about the world he was now living in that he felt it sort of daunting to say that he was from a place that considered the reason they were all there a mortal sin. As much as he wanted to do the opposite he held back in his classes, unsure of if he actually even belonged there despite the fact that everything pointed to him being a wizard. His teachers and classmates noticed his hesitation and though he didn't want to it caused him to stand out a little bit. They tried to encourage him and coax him out of his shell but ultimately he felt as though he was failing himself and everything he'd set out to do. Even though he knew it wouldn't do any good he sent a letter back to his home, hoping that once his parents received it they would realize that he wasn't someone who was taken over by the devil and instead was just a boy nervous about being away from home and being at a new school. The owl flew back with an injured wing and a bible tied to its leg. The delivery happened at breakfast and suddenly everyone knew why he was so apprehensive. A couple of the older students came forward told him their stories. He wasn't the only one that came from a religious family and he wasn't the only one whose family wasn't proud of having a witch or wizard among them. Finally it clicked that he had a new family. Sure they weren't related by blood but at this point the only thing that got him was nothing but pain. He started to do better in his classes. Leland participated more and started to make some friends within his house and even a few outside of it. Once he began to relax the year went by much more smoothly and his grades rose to something passable. The only problem was where he was going to stay once the summer started. He couldn't go back to his family home without severe complication and the fact that if he did he probably wouldn't leave whole. The family that hosted him when he first arrived agreed to keep him once more so that he could live a normal life, well as normal as life as a wizard could be. They made sure to include him in everything they did whether it be as simple as going to the store or even just cooking. When his birthday rolled around he wasn't expecting much, if anything at all. They had always been minimalist affairs when he was at his house and gifts were few and far between. Not because they were short on money but because his father had always believed in children working for what they received. He was ecstatic though once they brought him his main present, a small kitten which he promptly named Buttercup. She was a strange looking kitten and grumpier than most but he loved her immensely. The second all the way to the third year went by without much of a hitch. He did as well as could be expected in his classwork and began to notice other people. And by that he began to notice boys. Once more he felt himself panicking over something that he had no control over and his father's words about sin following sin began to echo in his mind. While he couldn't deny his abilities he could deny other things and he did his best to do so. Though his hormones tugged another way he began asking out girls and spending time with them. It never got far though and a week or two into the relationship it would end for one reason or another. He got the reputation of being a heart breaker and apparently that made him even more attractive to the females he wasn't even interested in. Half-hearted kisses got him through until his fifth year. He wasn't prepared for the increase in difficulty in the classwork though... Leaving him to realize that he would be stuck in his fifth year while his other classmates were moving on to their sixth.
