Long ago Kurama had hoped to carve out his own territory within his native Eeste. To do so, however, he knew that he would need more than just his ambition: he would need riches, and power. To acquire the former, he fell to banditry, eventually becoming Eeste's 'Legendary Bandit, Youko Kurama'. Over time, he acquired a small army of like-minded individuals.

Twenty-six years ago, however, he was gravely wounded during a failed heist. With no other recourse, he fled Eeste, opting to hide in Gaia. It was then that he found himself in Utopia City. Too weak to survive as a bodiless spirit, he took possession of the the an unborn child of a woman by the name of Shiori Minamino, killing the child's original soul in the process. He had only intended to stay in the human world long enough to re-build his demon energy, but things didn't quite go according to plan.

Even though he was trapped in the body of a child, Kurama retained his youko memories and personality, and thus, retained his dislike of humankind. He thought he was superior to his human mother, and, over time, did little other than break the woman's spirit. However, being the good mother that she was, she persevered, continuing to care for the child that she saw as her son, completely unaware that he was, in reality, a demon.

It wasn't until his mother risked her own life to save his own, did he finally change. As far as life-threatening situations went, it wasn't the worst one that he had ever encountered. An earthquake hit his home, and he was nearly crushed by a nearby bookshelf when it toppled over. His mother dove over him, pushing him out of the way in order to take the blow herself, and protect her son. Acts of altruism aren't exactly common in the demon world, and as such, he was struck by her kindness. He resolved then to repay the kindness that he had been given, striving now to be a good son for her sake.

Given that he was, mentally, thousands of years older than anyone in his generation, he progressed quickly through all of his classes, achieving high grades with next to no effort. Eventually he did break the news to his mother of his true identity as a fox spirit. He was mildly surprised to discover that Shiori had suspected as much the entire time. He then changed his name to reflect his blended identity, retaining his given demon name and his human last name: Kurama Minamino.

He got the opportunity to enrol in the prestigious Utopia Institute and took the chance. He found that he rather liked the place, and, upon graduating, went to teacher's college in the hopes that one day he could return, this time, as an instructor.
