It was a wonderful day outside, not that Alex noticed. He thought it should be raining, not sunny and happy outside. It's how he felt, as he wandered along, eyes dimmed in shock, and letter grasped tightly in his fist. He was walking, aimlessly, without direction. His mind was blank, and he felt cold. His eyes, though dull, shined with unshed tears. It wasn't fair, he thought. It just wasn't fair. "Never beg... Earn by winning, or else you won't get anything... he muttered. It was the motto of the Stones. The family was an old one, though they weren't nobles, they were old blood. But just tracing your history back meant nothing. Stonemasons for so very long, before the Stones branched out, and moved to settle their own town within their country. Alex was now the very last of them. His brother was dead.

Mmm... I can't wait for classes to start. The young half-vampire girl wandered through the Utopia Institute's grounds, I wonder what kind of new people I'll meet. she thought, kicking a small stone ahead of her. It bumped up against something, its small surface barely bouncing off the white pavement. Alice looked up, and her friend was standing right in front of her. "Alex!" she called cheerily, running up to him. As soon as she saw his expression, her cheeriness faded. She approached him slowly, as if trying to comfort a wounded animal before helping it. Her eyebrows furrowed together, and she clasped her hands. "Alex...?" she called again with worry.

He blinked, stopping. His eyes were fuzzy, but he smiled wearily, but there was no heart in it. "Alice... Hey..." he greeted despondently. He tried to smile again, but couldn't muster the energy to do it. He just stood there, awkwardly. He didn't want to throw his problems onto her, but he also didn't want to worry her. She was his friend, after all. He goes over to a bench to sit down, not wanting to walk anymore. Sitting down, he just stares at the letter in his hand. He blinks back fresh tears, not wanting to cry in front of a girl.

Alice was unsure about what she was going to do. She hesitantly reached for his arm in a comforting touch, but stopped her hand right before she made contact. Her pink eyes followed the boy as he made his way over to the bench, waiting until he was sitting before she, too made her way over. Alice sat down next to him, noticing the letter for the first time. Probably has something to do with that... she thought, but kept herself from reading it. She didn't want to infringe on his privacy. "You're the kindest boy I know." she began, "Kindness begets kindness. You should know that better than anyone." She paused for a moment before continuing. She chose her words carefully. "What I said before... I said I'll help you with anything. I meant that. It's ok to tell me what's on your mind, because I know you'd do the same for me. If you don't want to talk about it, you can just lean on my shoulder for a while." she said gently, her words floating through the air as a puff of cloud floats above the crisp air on the peak of a mountain.

He slowly nodded. He took a deep shaky breath, and spoke, leaning against her for comfort. "The only reason I could even come to Eden is because everyone is dead. My mother, my father, my sister, my grandfather and everyone in my town. All of them. We usually had a force off 20 knights or warriors protecting us. We're out in the WIlderness, so it can be dangerous. But... The town was over-run. It was horrible. All I could do was hide and watch as they ate and desecrated my family. I was so scared, I couldn't do anything. In the end, only I survived. Me, and my brother, a knight. We collected all the money in the town, and we made our way to Eden. It was a long, hard journey, but we did it. I buried my grief. I had to live for tomorrow, for my brother's sake. And now he's gone too. I'm the last Stone. My grandfather once told me that as long as a single Stone stood tall, we could be a wall. But I'm nothing. I'm weak, powerless... I'm even afraid to fight. Everytime I try, I keep remembering what happened. Over and over. My brother said he would always protect me, but now he's gone too. GOne like everyone else. I'm all alone, all alone. I don't want to be alone..." he rambled on and on, telling her everything. His grip relaxed on the letter, which detailed his brother had passed away in he line of duty, and his personal belongings would be given to Alex soon and so on. Alex didn't care he just wanted his family back. He wanted his brother.

After Alex was finished speaking, a heavy silence fell upon the two friends. The blonde looked towards the boy resting on her shoulder, fighting off tears for his sake. She tried to find the right words, tried to find the exact phrase that would relinquish all of his pain. But nothing came to mind. No words could ever erase the gap in Alex's heart. Alice knew that. She took a deep breath in, knowing that Alex could feel her chest rise and fall with each breath, hoping that he would follow her example. She wrapped one arm around his shoulder, pulling him tighter towards her in a comforting gesture.
"Don't bury your grief. You already know it will only cause you more." she began, "It's a time for grieving. No one would blame you for being sad. But life goes on, Alex. Your family may be gone, but they are also alive within you. You have all the knowledge and memories that they passed on to you. Those precious times together- remember them all, because those are what have survived mortality. Use them to benefit you, not make you weak or powerless. That's what your family would have wanted." she looked towards the sky, observing the blotchy clouds that shrouded the sun. It completely covered the glowing orange. Not a ray of light was allowed through. "I know I can never be a replacement for your family, Alex, but I want you to know that you are not alone. You will never be alone. You have me and all the memories of your family, right here." she took her arm out from around Alex's shoulder and turned so that she was facing him. Daintily, she placed her hand over his heart.

He took comfort in the presence of his friend. Just her being there, right then, was helping him, and as he cried against her, he listened to her words. She was right. All his memories, no one could take that away. He wasn't a quitter. It was okay to grieve, but he would be okay. Just... right now, he needed to get it out of him. He felt her hand on his chest, and he nodded, then threw his arms around her in a big hug.
"Thank you, Alice." he said into her hair, then released her. He sat back against the bench, and just took a deep, shuddering breath and released it. His eyes were red and fae a bit blotchy, but he still gave her a tentative smile. She was his friend. She had proven that now. He leaned back, looking up at the sky. He needed some comfort food. Or something, anyway. "Hey, let's go get ice cream." he suddenly said, still looking up at the sky. He felt drained, a bit empty, and he needed a distraction. Ice cream could be that distraction. It sounded like a good idea to him, after all.

She was relieved that Alex thought her words were helpful. Often times Alice doubted her ability to speak to people due to her lack of exposure, but speaking from the heart seemed to work just as well. Reassured, she removed her lightly placed hand from his chest and set it in her lap. She tapped her thumbs together in nervousness, but her face showed nothing but support for Alex. With a tentative smile, she rose from the bench and stretched up her arms to the sky. "Let's go get ice cream, then. I bet you can't guess what flavor I like best!" she teased, deciding that getting Alex's mind off the subject was better than letting him dwell in depression. "I bet your favorite is vanilla. You seem like that kind of person." she teased, lightly yet firmly grabbing his hand and leading him towards [insert wherever sells ice cream here].

Glad for the distraction the gil posed, he smiled a megawatt grin at her when she challenged him to find her favorite flavor. He laughed when she said vanilla, and shook his head, putting his mind on this task instead of his family. "Vanilla? Hah! That's so plain. I mean it's good, but I like orange sherbert the best!" he nudged her and grinned, his mind trying to guess hers. After a moment, he spoke up, "Hmm... I think that you're more of a strawberry kind of girl. Well, am I right?" He teased, eyes flashing mischievously. He really did carry his heart on his sleeve.
He grabbed her hand, as he often is wont to do, and began to half-drag her along. "Come on, we should be getting pretty close!" he always forgot it wasn't quite proper to just grab people's hands. It's hard to throw off how you're raised, though, and he had done this all his life, and had it done to him all his life.
